Athletic Assessment
Are you ready?
To play college football, several athletic qualities are essential. First speed and agility are crucial for quick movements on the field. Strength and endurance are also important to withstand the physical demands of the game. Additionally, good hand-eye coordination and mental toughness can greatly enhance a player's performance and ability to compete at a higher level.
Common Physical Assessments
-
40-Yard Dash — Speed & Acceleration
-
Pro Agility Shuttle (5-10-5) — Change of Direction
-
Three-Cone Drill (L-Drill) — Agility & Movement Fluidity
-
Vertical Jump & Broad Jump — Explosiveness
-
Bench Press — Upper Body Strength
Cognitive & Mental Evaluations
Some programs also look at how well an athlete understands the game, makes decisions, and processes information under pressure. This might include:
-
Football IQ evaluations based on how players read plays or schemes.
-
Historically, tests like the Wonderlic have been used at pro levels to measure reasoning ability, though they’re less common now and not a standard part of college tryouts.
-
Most importantly your grades matter!!!! Your grades are a direct representation of your work ethic and cognitive skills....and yes, coaches look at those and so do we!
Why These Assessments Matter
-
Objective Comparison: They let coaches compare athletes using the same measures, so they can see who’s physically ready.
-
Position-Specific Skills: Different positions require different strengths (Linemen need strength and power vs Receivers and defensive backs need speed and agility)
-
Helps With Recruiting: Even if it’s not a formal NCAA combine, strong numbers can help a player get noticed by coaches at camps or tryouts.
