Coach Jean Guillaume
Founder Maroons Academy
Raised in Montreal, Jean Sorphia Guillaume—known widely as Coach Jean—has built a lifelong journey at the intersection of football, education, and human development. His athletic path began early, earning selections to Quebec’s U‑15 and U‑17 provincial teams, participating in numerous NCAA football camps, and later competing at Vanier College before completing his playing career with the Carabins at l’Université de Montréal.
Alongside his passion for the game, Coach Jean discovered a deep interest in Human Sciences. Even as a young athlete and coach, those around him—friends, colleagues, and mentors—recognized his natural leadership and commitment to uplifting others. This calling inspired a dual academic pursuit, culminating in two college degrees from Vanier College: Social Science and International Studies.
Motivated by a dedication to youth in need, Coach Jean continued his education at the University of Ottawa, where he became actively involved in community work—as a football coach, child and youth counselor, mentor in a transitional home, and substitute teacher. He went on to complete a BA in Sociology, a BA in Social Work, a Master of Social Work, and is currently completing a BA in Education.
Grounded in values of integrity, compassion, and social justice, Coach Jean brings unwavering energy and purpose to every young person he encounters. Football has always been his favorite medium to inspire growth, resilience, and academic success. His Master’s thesis focused on how high school coaches can facilitate social integration and academic achievement among at‑risk youth—reflecting his belief in the power of mentorship through sport.
In 2004, he founded The Maroons Academy with a vision to help young men develop advanced football skills while building character, confidence, and community. Maroons Academy emphasizes enjoyment of the game, improved self‑esteem, skill development, and deep knowledge of football—all rooted in the principles of teamwork and sportsmanship.
Echoing the philosophy of football innovator John W. Heisman, Coach Jean believes that true success lies in balancing athletic excellence with academic progress. His mission is to empower athletes socially, strengthen their mental health, and teach the values of citizenship—using football as a vehicle to build stronger communities.
